Flood situation worsens in Netrakona

NETRAKONA: Overall flood situation in three upazilas -Kalmakanda, Barhatta and Purbadhala – under Netrakona district further deteriorated on Monday as new fresh areas inundated by the flood waters, reports BSS.

District administration and Water Development Board (WDB) office sources on Monday said, the flood situation worsened further during the last 24 hours due to torrential rainfall and swelling trend of two rivers-Khanso and Ubdakhali which were flowing above danger levels at different points.

However, the flood situation was improving in Durgapur upazila where the river Sumeswari kept maintaining falling trend in it’s water-levels during the last 24 hours, the sources said.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Netrakona Ariful Islam told BSS that the flood has so far affected 17,600 families of 217 villages under 21 unions of the five upazilas in the district.

Meanwhile, number of 200 educational institutions were closed in the flood-hit areas by the authorities due to inundation of the institutions premises and rural roads around the institutions.

Forty flood-hit families were taken shelter in two flood-shelters set up in the Kalmakanda upazila by the local administration.

The DC informed that the government has already allocated taka five lakhs in cash and 300 metric tons of rice for the flood affected people of the district.
