Awami League (AL) Publicity and Publication Secretary Hasan Mahmud on Saturday said BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia ‘benefitted most from the assassination of Ziaur Rahman’.

“It should be investigated whether BNP’s top leaders were implicated in the killing of Zia,” he said.

Hasan, also the information minister, came up with the statements while addressing a discussion at Awami League headquarters on Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital.

Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote organised the event marking Sheikh Hasina’s imprisonment with its vice-president and Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra artist Rafiqul Alam in the chair.

Hasan said after the killing of Ziaur Rahman, his wife Khaleda Zia became chairperson of BNP and served as prime minister twice.

“Why didn’t BNP try the killers of Ziaur Rahman? Why didn’t she file a case?” he said.

Mentioning that Ziaur Rahman had killed hundreds of army officers without any trial, the minister said trial for those killings should be held.
