Bacteria, stool germs in WASA water

Water, supplied from Chandni Ghat and Saidabad Water Treatment Plants by Dhaka WASA is highly unsafe for human body as it contains hazardous bacterial organisms and human waste, a study report suggests.

The report has been conducted recently at the laboratories of Buet, Dhaka University and icddr,b as per the High Court (HC) order.

The report is scheduled to submit before the HC on next Sunday (July 7).

According to the report’s findings, out of 34 samples, chosen from surface water of Buriganga and Shitalakkhya rivers and groundwater sources of the rivers, 8 samples contain highly hazardous bacterial organisms.

Besides this, the study also found germs of human waste (stool) in the water samples of some city areas, supplied by Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA).

Earlier, on May 21, the HC directed the authorities concerned in supplying water to city area to test the WASA supply water of 34 areas in Buet, Dhaka University and icddr,b laboratories.

The HC bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Khairul Alam passed the order while hearing a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer advocate Tanvir Ahmed.

A committee formed by Local Government and Rural Development ministry was ordered to submit the report before the high court after collecting and testing water samples of the city area by early July.
