Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Monday said the proposal of congressman to stop the US assistance to Myanmar would be helpful for repatriation of the Rohingya people to their own country.
“I think the proposal will create extra pressure on the Myanmar authorities to take them (Rohigyas) back,” he told a press conference at the conference room of his Secretariat office in the city.Hasan, also Awami League publicity and Publication Secretary, said the Rohingya people are the citizens of Myanmar and they were represented in parliament also. But, now the Myanmar government is refusing their (Rohingya) citizenship, he added.
Replying to a question, Hasan said US congressman Bradely Sherman gave a proposal to include the Rakhain state of Myanmar under Bangladesh territory. “It was his proposal. And the congress didn’t accept it. I don’t want to say anything on this,” he said.
The Rohingya people should be repatriated to their homeland with full dignity and safety to resolve the crisis, the minister said. He underscored the need for early repatriation of the displaced people.
Hundreds of thousands of Rohigya people fled to Bangladesh following a 2017 crackdown by the Myanmar military.
About BNP’s comment on budget, the minister said BNP is criticizing the national budget in an identical manner every year.
Dr Hasan said BNP doesn’t see any development whereas the world community says that Bangladesh and its economy are going ahead.Terming the budget an excellent one, the minister said the size of GDP has increased four times and the size of the budget has increased eight times during the Awami League government’s tenure.
He said Bangladesh is now a food-surplus country.
About militancy, Dr Hasan said the government under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has successfully combated militancy. “Bangladesh is now a role model before the world in combating militancy,” he added.
Information Secretary Abdul Malek was present in the press conference.
