Legendary Bengali poet-playwright Michael Madhusudan Dutt’s 146th death anniversary being observed today.
The founder of modern Bangla literature died at the age of 49 on June 29 in 1873.Different cultural organisations have arranged commemorative programmes on Madhusudan Dutt across the country marking the day.
In Madhusudan’s birth place Jessore, different organisations will pay tribute to the poet by organising commemorative programmes.
Michael Madhusudan Dutt, born on January 25, 1824, was a prolific poet-playwright who enriched Bangla literature with his plays, poems and other literary works.
Though Madhusudan initially wrote English poems, he eventually switched to Bangla and penned some classic poems and plays.
Among his notable works are Sharmishtha (1859), Ekei Ki Bole Shabhyata (1860), Buro Shaleker Ghare Roan (1860), Padmabati (1860), Tilattama Shambhab (1860), Meghnad Badh Kavya (1861), Krishnakumari (1861), Mayakanan (1874), The Captive Lady (1849) and others.
