BSMMU doctors conduct country’s first ever liver transplant surgery at public hospital

BSMMU doctors conduct country’s first ever liver transplant surgery at public hospital

A successful liver transplant surgery was conducted by BSMMU physicians in the hospital and it crated a history to be the first of this kind at a public hospital of the country.  

Professor Dr Zulfiqar Rahman Khan, chairman of the Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic and Liver Transplantation Surgery Department at BSMMU, on Tuesday disclosed the information in a briefing at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) with the presence of Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque.

A team of doctors, led by Prof Zulfiqar, conducted the 16-hour long surgery on a 20-year-old man from Monday evening.

“The surgery was conducted free of cost yesterday on the man after his mother donated a portion of her liver to him,” Prof Zulfiqar said.

He also informed that the patient was diagnosed with Liver Cirrhosis in 2017.

During the briefing, he expressed his hope that this advancement will bring a new dimension in the healthcare sector of the country.

Congratulating the success in the public healthcare sector of Bangladesh, Zahid Maleque said, “It’s a milestone, we are very proud of this success.”
