6.3 magnitude earthquake hits Indonesia’s Papua

A 6.3 magnitude earthquake rocked Papua, in eastern Indonesia on Thursday, US seismologists said.

No major damage or casualties have been reported yet.

The tremor felt about 250 km west of the town of Abepura in Papua province at around 12: 46 am, according to the US Geological Survey.

Most of the people did not notice the quake.

One of the Abepura resident Arul Firmansyah told AFP that, “I was still awake at home but I did not feel it all and none of my neighbours ran out of their home,”.

Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where tectonic plates collide.

Last year, a 7.5-magnitude quake and a subsequent tsunami in Palu on Sulawesi island killed more than 2,200 with a thousand more declared missing.
