ovt releases 5 new rice, 1 wheat varieties

The government has released five new rice and a wheat varieties on Wednesday with an aim to country’s food production.

National Seed Board (NSB), approved the release of those seed varieties during its 99th meeting, said Ashraf Uddin Ahmed, Director of Seed Wing, Ministry of Agriculture.

Among the rice varieties, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) has developed three, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) developed one rice variety, University of Rajshahi developed one rice variety and Bangladesh Wheat and Maize Research Institute (BWMRI) developed a wheat variety.

Farmers will be able to grow the new variety in 117 days and average production is 5.07 tonnes per hectre.

BRRI- 91 (Aman) variety is suitable for shallow flood-prone area and it is not titled due to thick base. Farmers will be able to grow the new variety in 156 days while it also gives 2.36 tonnes per hectre.
