BFSA chief apologises, cleared of contempt charge

The High Court on Sunday cleared Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) Chairman Mahfuzul Haque of contempt charges after he apologised to it unconditionally for not complying with its order.

A HC bench comprising Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik-Al Jalil passed the exemption order when he appeared before the court and offered apology for not complying with the HC’s May 12 order.

Earlier on May 23, the court summoned the chairman of BFSA for failing to recall the 52 food products a recent Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) test found substandard, from the market.

At the same time, the court also served the chairman a contempt of court notice.

The High Court (HC) on May 12 directed the authorities concerned to immediately remove from the market 52 food products which are found substandard by Bangladesh Standard Testing Institution (BSTI).
