The food ministry gets Taka 4,503 crore under the heads of operating and development in the proposed budget for 2019-20 fiscal year.
Of the total food budget, Taka 3,614 crore has been earmarked for non-development part and Taka 889 crore for development purposes.About the food management, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal in his budget speech said, “Our initiatives to upgrade the foodgrain storage capacity at government level to 28 lakh metric tons by 2020 are underway.”
He said the goal of our government is to ensure adequate supply of safe and nutritious food. “We are working relentlessly to achieve this goal,” he added.
The minister said initiatives will be taken for open market sale (OMS) of foodgrains at low price and allocation of food to poor people under social protection programme.
“At the same time, we will take steps to adopt digital technology to improve monitoring of food procurement, storage, and distribution management as well as supply of safe food.”
