Users of different cell-phone operators have expressed their disappointment over frequent call drops, data packages and quality of services at a maiden hearing on telecom services after the present government assumed office following the December 30 general elections.

Around 500 stakeholders of telecom services attended the BTRC (Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission) sponsored hearing at the Engineering Institute yesterday.

Some of the consumers also expressed their resentment against the regulatory authority, BTRC, for allegedly favouring the operators.

Bangladesh Cell-phone Consumers Association President Mohiuddin Ahmed raised question about the BTRC’s jurisdiction as it published a 3-year old allegation on a particular cell-phone operator although the problem was solved within 90 days.

Responded about raise of voice call tariffs, BTRC said the voice call rate is comparatively lower in the country. The BTRC also said they require some time to ensure 100 percent 4G services.

The regulator said they are able to work ensuring 5G services within six month subject to approval by the ministry. The BTRC, however, expressed its dissatisfaction over internet tariff.

BTRC chairman Md Jahirul Huq chaired the hearing which was attended, among other, by commissioners Md Aminul Hasan, Md Rezaul Kader, Md Mohiuddin Ahmed, director generals of BTRC and top officials of telecom operators.
