A section of dishonest railway employees, in collusion with some local people, are allegedly pilfering diesel from railway engines in Lalpur upazila of Natore district.

The syndicate is selling the pilfered diesel on the black market and making money illegally.

Lalpur Police Station received many complaints in this regard over the last few years.  Though many crooks involved in the crime were arrested and jailed during the last few years, the crime is still continuing unabated.

On May 20, members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-5) arrested Hafizul Islam, Lalon, Akkas Ali and Makhan from Abdullahpur Railway Junction at Lalpur and recovered 2,100 litres of diesel.

A case was filed with Lalpur Police Station in this regard.

When contacted, Railway Additional Director General (Rolling Stock) Mohammad Shamsuzzaman, who is the main custodian of railway’s diesel stock, told this correspondent that he was unaware of the oil recovery by RAB members.

“I do not know about the incident of the oil recovery by the law enforcers,” he said.

Anwar Hossain, media wing officer of RAB-5, told the Daily Sun that a strong syndicate is active behind the crime of diesel pilferage here in Lalpur.

Lalpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nazrul Islam Molam told the Daily Sun that he had received many complaints of railway oil pilferage.

“Before my joining here many allegations were lodged with the police station in this regard”.

When asked about railway staffers’ involvement in the crime, the OC said investigation in this regard is underway.

“But we shall arrest all involved in the crime,” he said.

Earlier on September 20, 2018, an activist of ruling Awami League and a BNP man were caught red-handed while they were fleeing with over 2,500 litres of diesel stolen from a railway engine at Azimnagar Rail Station.
