‘Drug peddler’ killed in ‘gunfight’

COX’S BAZAR: An alleged drug peddler was killed in a ‘gunfight with police at Teknaf upazila in the district on Thursday.

 The deceased was identified as Mohammad Hanif, 38, son of Kashem Ali of Natmura area under the upazila.

 Officer in-Charge (OC) Pradip Kumar Das of Teknaf police station said they arrested Hanif from the Natmura area on Wednesday evening.

 Acting on his statement, a team of police conducted a drive taking him to recover drug and firearm in Solar Plant Project area under Hnilla union of the upazila in the early morning, the police officer said.  

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, cohorts of Hanif opened fire on the cops prompting them to retaliate with bullet that triggered a gunfight, he said.

 At one stage, criminals fled the scene leaving Hanif in bullet-hit condition, the OC said.  He was rushed to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where on-duty physicians declared him dead, Pradip said adding that three cops were also injured during the gunfight. 

Three local guns, nine rounds of bullet and 4,000 pieces of Yaba tablet were recovered from the spot after the gunfight, said the OC.
