BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who has been imprisoned on corruption charges, has refused to contest the Bogura by-election slated for June 24.

The party has taken a decision that Khaleda Zia will not participate in the election as she refused to sign the nomination paper on Wednesday afternoon, sources said. Earlier, the party has nominated five leaders, including Khaleda Zia, for contesting the by-election.

“Nomination papers were collected from the BNP central office for Khaleda Zia and four other leaders,” ABM Abdus Sattar, personal secretary to the BNP chief, told the daily sun on Wednesday.

Other nominees are Bogura BNP convener Golam Mohammad Siraj, local leaders Rejaul Karim Badshah and Joynal Abedin Chan and Khaleda’s adviser AKM Mahbubur Rahman.

The decision about the nomination was taken at a meeting at the BNP central office at Nayapaltan in the capital on Tuesday.

BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman joined the meeting through videoconference from London while Bogura district unit BNP leaders were present.

The parliamentary seat has fallen vacant as BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir did not take oath as a member of parliament.
