The High Court (HC) on Wednesday questioned the authorities’ failure to ensure fire safety in public transport.

An HC bench comprising Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader passed the order.

The order came following a writ petition filed by Advocate Abul Barakat Md Sazzad Al Bari Sohel.

The HC asked the authorities concerned of the government to explain why they shall not be directed to ensure installation of fire safety equipment in all public transports.

It also asked why the government shall not take necessary steps to save lives of citizens from fires in public transport under Article 31 of the Constitution.

Road transport and highway division and home ministry secretaries, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) chairman, fire service and civil defence DG and inspector general of police will have to reply to the rule within four weeks.

As per section 60 (3) of the Motor Vehicles Ordinance, 1983 and the circular issued by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority on Mar 2, 2017, the authorities are bound to ensure adequate fire extinguishers in public transports, said the writ petitioner.

The petitioner also referred to media reports saying fire incidents in buses and other vehicles claimed many lives and maimed many others.
