Govt increases rice import duty to 25 per cent from 3 per cent

The government has increased the duty on import of rice to protect local produce.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has taken the decision amid the protest of farmers as they have been counting losses for some days across the country.

The apex body for the revenue collection and management has increased the regulatory duty on rice imports to 25 per cent, from what was 3 per cent previously, said a notice.

According the notice, the importers will have to count a total of 55 per cent tax and duty now, which includes advance income tax of 5 per cent and prevailing 25 per cent tariff.
