A suspended leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) attempted to commit suicide by taking sleeping pills early on Tuesday.

Zarin Diya, a resident student of Ruqayyah Hall of Dhaka University, was suspended on Monday for her alleged involvement in an internal clash within the BCL at Dhaka University’s Madhur Canteen on May 13.

Sub-Inspector Bachchu Mia, who is working at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) police outpost, said: “Zarin was admitted to Ward No. 502 of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital at night. Her stomach had been washed. She was discharged at noon.”

Former program and planning affairs secretary Rakib Hossain, who has been ‘deprived of the post’ in the BCL committee, said: “We have talked to her around 9:00 or 10:00 pm last night (Monday). Her mother told us that she was not at home. We found her with the help of law enforcement agency by tracking her cell phone and whisked her off to the hospital at around 3:15 am.

“Zarin was taken to a relative’s house from the hospital around 1:00 pm on Tuesday. Although she is now conscious, she is not in a state to speak at this moment.”
