BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed on Tuesday said setting up a makeshift court in Keraniganj Central Jail to hold the trial of party Chairperson Khaleda Zia in various cases is ‘inconsistent’ with the constitution.

“We visited Keraniganj Jail yesterday (Monday) and found out that there is no atmosphere to deal with cases and ensure justice (for Khaleda Zia). We think setting up such a court goes against the constitution. The constitutional right of a citizen to have justice will be violated through it,” he said.

The BNP leader came up with the statements addressing a human chain arranged by Bangladesh Sammilita Peshajibi Parishad in front of the Jatiya Press Club in the capital demanding release of Khaleda Zia from jail.

Moudud said they will soon approach the Supreme Court challenging the legality of the government’s decision to set up the court. Nagarik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, BNP vice chairmen Khandaker Mahbub Hossain and Shaukat Mahmud, among others, addressed the programme.
