CuU student held over derogatory remarks

CUMILLA: A Cumilla University student was arrested on Sunday for hurting religious sentiment under the Information and Communication Technology Act. Sub-Inspector of Kotwali Model Police Station Md Imam Hasan confirmed the matter. The student was also suspended from the university.

Joy Dev Chandra Shill, a third year student of Finance and Banking department of CuU, has allegedly made a derogatory remark about Islam and Prophet Mohammad (SM.) on Saturday on a Facebook page namely Voice of America.

Joy, however, deleted it after a screenshot of the comment was shared on Cumilla University Facebook group and apologised there. Meanwhile, on Sunday, a human chain in the name of CuU general students was formed on CuU premises at around 12:00 pm and gave a memorandum to the university Vice-Chancellor demanding immediate exemplary punishment of the accused from the university.

CuU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Emran Kabir Chowdhury said, ‘It’s an extreme malfeasance. We expelled him temporarily. We will take legal actions looking into the matter’.
