BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Sunday announced a two-day programme demanding that the government ensure fair price for farmers’ paddy and pay salary arrears to jute mill workers.

“The government has deprived the farmers of getting due price in a bid to give an opportunity to its own people to plunder money,” Rizvi said.

He made the announcement at a press conference at its central office in Nayapaltan of the capital.

On May 21, BNP will hand over memorandums to the offices of deputy commissioners (DCs) around the country and form human chains at ‘haat-bazaars’ in union parishad level the following day.

He said though the government has fixed the price of per maund of paddy at Tk 1040, the farmers are getting only Tk 450 to Tk 500. And the rest of the money ‘is going to pockets of Awami League leaders, mill owners, and some officials and employees’, he said.

Though there has been an outcry over the issue throughout the country, the government is least concerned about it, Rizvi said.

He said farmers from other countries benefit from crop production, but in Bangladesh, they are subjected to financial loss.

He urged the government to buy paddy directly from farmers.

About jute mill workers’ demand for their arrears, he said though they are continuously staging work stoppage, the government is not meeting their justified demand.

Meanwhile, Jatiyatabadi Krishak Dal, an associate body of BNP, has announced a weeklong programme all over the country from Tuesday to Sunday demanding that the farmers receive a fair price for their produce.
