Nine die as storm lashes country

A nor’wester lashed different parts of the country on Friday evening, leaving at least nine people dead and over 30 others injured.

Dhaka Met office said that a storm swept the capital with a speed of 65km.

The storm damaged a makeshift pandal set up in front of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque for Iftar purposes, killing a devotee and injuring 22 others.

Bachchu Mia, inspector of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said that the deceased was identified as Shafikul Islam, 40. The injured were admitted to the hospital.

Some victims said a storm hit the tent of the pandal that fell on the devotees offering magrib prayers. Firefighters rushed to the spot and conducted a rescue operation, said Rasel Shikder, duty officer at the Fire Service Control Room.

Three people died in Badda area of the capital when a wall collapsed on them during the storm. Their identities could not be known immediately.

In Chapainawabganj, thunderbolts struck two people at Shrirampur village in Sadar Upazila. They are Rezaul Karim, 40, and Hazrat Ali, 60.

In Naogaon, two farmers were killed in lightning strikes at Ganuair village in Porsha Upazila. The victims were Shahinur Rahman Bishu, 32, and Hasan Ali, 30.

In Rajshahi, a tree fell on an elderly man during a storm, leaving him dead on the spot. The deceased was identified as Abdus Sobhan Sarker, 80.

Two flights of US Bangla Airlines en route to Dhaka landed at Chattogram Shah Amanat Airport due to the storm.
