BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will be taken to Keraniganj Jail after her treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan has said.
“Preparations have been completed to shift her, Khaleda will be kept in the prison where women prisoners are kept,” the minister told reporters at his secretariat office on Tuesday.The minister said Khaleda Zia was kept in Dhaka’s old central jail till now just because the female ward in the Keraniganj jail was not ready. The ward is now ready and she will be transferred there.
“The old central jail, where she had been kept since February last year, will be converted into a museum,” the home minister said.
When asked about Khaleda’s health, Asaduzzaman said the former prime minister was doing well. “She’s fasting and taking insulin as well,” he said.
The minister also said the government is trying to bring back Khaleda Zia’s son Tarique Rahman from London, where he is currently staying, under political asylum. Tarique was also convicted in a graft case.
Khaleda has been in jail since February last year at the Old Dhaka Central Jail after being convicted in two corruption cases.
On April 1, Khaleda Zia was admitted to the BSMMU hospital as her health condition deteriorated while she was serving time in jail. A five-member medical board was formed to examine her condition.Currently, the trial proceedings in 17 cases against Khaleda are being held at a makeshift court set up in the old jail.
On Monday, the law ministry issued a gazette notification saying that a makeshift court will be set up in Keraniganj jail’s building no 2 to try the pending cases filed against the BNP Chairperson.
