Garment workers block Pragati Sarani for salary arrears

Garment workers of a factory in the capital on Friday staged demonstration blocking Pragati Sarani of Moddha Badda demanding payment of salary arrears and allowance.

Several hundred workers of Star Garments participated in the blockade programme on Friday afternoon.

The road blocked led a standstill on the Pragati Sarani from 4:00pm to 6:00pm, causing serious traffic congestion in the both side of the road.

Hundreds of vehicles got stuck during their blockade, causing mass-sufferings to the home bound passengers on the 4th day of the holy Ramandan.

The workers alleged that the owners shut the factory in April 2019. Then, they promised them to pay their due salaries and allowances in May.

Factory owners promised them to pay their due salary on May 10 at Combined Garments Workers Federation office in Mohakhali.

The workers went the office and waited whole day for their payment. But authorities concerned in the factory didn’t appear at the office.

The protesting workers said, “As they have not kept their promise, we have been forced to come to the street to wage our demands.”

There were some 800 workers in the factory. They had not got salaries for 3 months.

Later, police rushed to the spot and called for the owners of the factory.

Workers left the street after the owners promised them to pay the due salaries on Friday.
