Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday asked the authorities concerned to quickly assess the damage and provide assistance to cyclone Fani victims.
She also prayed for the people who died during the cyclone and extended condolences to the bereaved families.
The Prime Minister, who is now in London, also directed her party Awami League’s leaders and activists to stand by the cyclone victims.
Cyclone Fani hit Bangladesh on Saturday morning, damaging houses and cropland. At least six people were killed in lightning strikes in Kishoreganj on Friday when Fani’s peripheral impact was felt.
Ten more deaths were reported from across the country on Saturday.
Rescue operations and distribution of relief and other assistance have already begun in the affected areas, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.
The district and upazila administrations, various departments, public representatives, and private organisations are working to estimate the loss.
Members of Bangladesh Army, Navy and the Air Force have reached the affected areas to be engaged in relief distribution. The Air Force is also helping to assess the damage.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary Nojibur Rahman held a meeting with senior PMO officials on tackling the post-cyclone situation.
He directed concerned PMO officials to maintain close contact with administrations of the affected districts and provide necessary advices.
Rahman also asked them to ensure that necessary steps are taken by following the government’s standing orders on disaster management.
