Orangutan escapes from Melbourne zoo

Zoo goers have been evacuated after an orangutan escaped from its enclosure at Melbourne Zoo, for the second time in four years.

Malu, a 15-year-old Sumatran orangutan, escaped shortly after 3 pm this afternoon.

A zoo spokesperson said in a statement that “all visitors were managed safely.”

“We can confirm that was no danger or threat to any visitors in the zoo, however visitors were evacuated as is our standard protocol in these cases.’

This is Malu’s second escape attempt after forcing the zoo into lockdown in 2015 when he used a blanket to escape from his cage.
