Marriage registrar jailed for child marriage in Gaibandha

A mobile court has convicted a marriage registrar and sentenced him six months in jail on charge of his involvement in a child marriage registration in Gobindaganj of Gaibandha.

Upazila Nirbahi officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate Ramkirishno Barmon passed the order on Monday night.

The girl was Nasrin Akter, a student of class eight.

The marriage registrar was identified as Abdul Hadi (50), a resident of Kochashahor village in Kochashahor union of the upazila.

Locals said a marriage registration was supposed to hold between Nasrin Akter, daughter of Rafiqul Islam, of Sahapur village with Abdul Momin, son of Jakirul Islam, of Solagari village.

On information, Upazila Nirbahi officer (UNO) Ramkirishno Barmon rushed to the spot and awarded 6-month jail to the marriage registrar Abdul Hadi.

Confirming the incident, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gobindoganj thana AKM Mehedi said the process was underway to send Abdul Hadi to jail on Tuesday.
