Noise pollution demands actions

Noise pollution is one of the most pervasive occupational health problems in the city. It is common that most drivers blow horn out of pique rather than warning someone of the danger of an accident. Traffic personnel who are discharging their duties in the city are worst sufferers as, among other pollutions, they remain exposed to the high level of sound pollution.

That almost half of the traffic personnel stationed in the capital are suffering from breathing and hearing complications mainly due to noise pollution is a matter of concern. Millions of school and commuters endure noise pollution every day mostly due to the heavy traffic jam. This tells us how the commuters in the city continue to suffer from the noise-pollution-induced ailments which lead to fatal health conditions

According to a study conducted by the Department of Environment, a tenth of the city dwellers suffer from hearing impairment and 35 per cent are suffering the same in different degrees. The situation calls for immediate actions.

Research has proved that noise pollution leaves complex effects on the social and behavioural attitudes and seriously lessens their work capacity. As a result, they perform poorly in schools and workplaces. Noise pollution at its worst also causes mental illness, high blood pressure and cardiac arrest.

As per the Noise Pollution (Control) Rules 2006, brick crushers are not allowed to operate within a 500-metre radius of a residential area and people and organisations cannot use loudspeakers without prior permission from the authorities but violation of these provisions is widespread.

The authorities should take note of the sufferings of a huge number of people from the growing health hazard. There is no alternative to launching awareness campaigns and the much-awaited enforcement of the law to prevent noise pollution. Hopefully, proactive measures will be taken in this regard without further delay.
