Awami League leader Ekramul Hoque Titu has become Mymensingh mayor in the first-ever polls to the newly formed city corporation.

Returning Officer Md Alimuzzaman declared Titu elected unopposed on Wednesday.

His only rival the Jatiya Party’s Zahangir Ahmed withdrew his nomination before the deadline ended on Wednesday.

Three independent aspirants lost candidacy in scrutiny on Apr 10.

Titu, who was elected mayor in the last polls to the local government body when it was a municipality, is currently serving as administrator of the city corporation.

He is a vice-president of the party’s Mymensingh Metropolitan unit.

Now the city composed of 33 general wards and 11 reserve wards will go to polls on May 5 to elect ward councillors.

The elections will be held with electronic voting machines or EVMs.  — Agencies
