Reckless drivers causing death to be awarded highest penalty

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq on Sunday said that the drivers will be awarded highest penalty if anyone dies due to their reckless driving.

“It (Deaths due to reckless driving) won’t be considered as death any longer. Rather, it will be considered as killing. The incident will be tried according to the section-302 of penal code”, Anisul Haq said.

He made this disclosure at a round table meeting, titled as “Safe Road: Enforcement of Laws and Mass-awareness” at the capital’s Press Club.

“Accident and killing are not same. All have to understand it.” He emphasised.

“If deaths due to reckless driving are proved, the court will be bound to pronounce highest penalty, death sentence or life imprisonment according to the penal code section-302” Anisul added.

He also said, “Government has passed “Road and Transportation Act-2018” on the Jatiya Sangsad. Law has been made; we are working on issuing regulations. The law will be in effect after the completion of regulations.”
