A private company executive was shot and injured and had his bag snatched by armed muggers in the capital’s Gulistan area in broad daylight on Saturday.

One of the gangsters also received gunshot wounds, as he shot himself accidentally with his own arms during the incident.

Victim Shujauddin Talukdar, 28, an executive of Navana Engineering Limited, and suspected mugger Zahidul Islam Shohag, 40, are now undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Shohag claimed that he is a truck driver of Boalmari Upazila in Faridpur and said that he came to Gulistan in the morning and was caught in the line of fire during exchange of gunfire in the area.

But Mahamudul Huq, officer-in-charge (OC) of Paltan Police Station, said Shohag is a mugger.

As Shujauddin was passing through the Gulistan Natyamanch area, Shohag along with his accomplice came in a motorbike.

After Shohag parked his bike, he crossed the road and tried to take away the bag of Shujauddin.

As he tried to resist him, Shohag fired on his leg. During the skirmish, Shohag was also hit by another bullet of his own gun. In the meantime, Shohag’s accomplice managed to make off with the bag.

There was, however, no money in the bag excepting some emergency papers, police said.
