Two Saudia crew among 3 held with gold at Dhaka airport

Three women, including two cabin crew members of Saudi Airlines, were arrested for possessing gold at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital on Monday.

A joint team of Customs and Armed Police Battalion (APBn) detained two female cabin crew members of Saudi Airlines for possessing 36 gold bars at the airport in the early hours of the day.

The two cabin crew members of Saudi Airlines are Sayma Akhter and Farjana Afrose.

Alamgir H Shimul, an additional superintendent of police (ASP) of APBn, informed that SV-802 of Saudi Airlines carrying Sayma and Farjana landed at the airport around 2:00am.

Acting on a tip off, a team of Customs officials and APBn searched them when they were trying to pass the green channel at the airport, the ASP said.

On search, the officials found 26 gold bars hidden inside the under garments of Sayma and 10 of Farjana, he said.

In a separate incident, a female bank official was arrested at the airport with gold sans proper documents.

According to Dhaka Customs House deputy commissioner Othello Chowdhury, Razia Sultana, 50, an official of Premier Bank, returned from Malaysia by a flight of BG-87 of Bangladesh Biman around 4:00am.

While passing the green channel, Razia was asked if she was carrying any object, for which, she needed to pay tax, but she denied.

On search, gold bars weighing one kilogram was recovered from her possession, the customs official said.

The market price of the gold recovered from Razia is around Tk 50 lakh, he added.

The three were handed over to Airport police.
