Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Monday confirmed that five Bangladeshi nationals had been killed in Friday’s terror attack in New Zealand mosques.

The minister came up with the latest death toll at a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the city on Monday.

He said the Bangladesh government has issued a travel alert for its citizens in New Zealand, asking them to stay alert while travelling outside.

The dead are Dr Abdus Samad, former Prof of Agronomy at Bangladesh Agriculture University, Hosne Ara Ahmed, hailing from Sylhet, Omar Faruk  of Narayanganj, Mojammel Haque of Chandpur and Zakaria Bhuiyan.

Among the injured, the condition of Lipi hailing from Kishoreganj is critical, and she might need another surgery. Mutassim, hailing from Gazipur, and Sheikh Hasan Rubel, who sustained bullet wounds in their feet are out of danger, added the minister.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam and Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque were also present during the briefing.

Some fifty people were killed and scores injured — some of them critically — in the violent terror attack on two mosques in Christchurch during Jumma prayer on Friday.
