BNP chief Khaleda Zia filed a leave to appeal petition with the Supreme Court against the High Court verdict that increased her punishment in Zia orphanage trust graft case.

Filed through her counsels on Thursday, she prayed for bail and suspension of her punishment in the case also.

Although lower court sentenced her to imprisonment for five years in the case, the High Court increased the jail term to 10 years, she contended in the leave to appeal.

Terming Khaleda Zia innocent, one of the defence counsels Kaiser Kamal said lower court punished her unlawfully and the HC doubled the jail term.

On November 18 last year, Khaleda Zia filed a provisional leave to appeal with the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the High Court verdict hiking punishment.

Joynul Abedin Tuhin, advocate on record, filed the petition with the Appellate Division that day.
