Third Independence Cup Fencing Championship kicks off

Third Independence Cup Fencing Championship 2019 began in Dhaka on Sunday at Shaheed Suhrawardy Indoor Stadium, Mirpur.


Professor Emeritus Dr. AK Azad Chowdhury, former Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University and ex Chairman, University Grants Commission (UGC) attended the inaugural program of the tournament as chief guest.


Naba Bikram Kishore Tripura, Chairman, Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Board participated in the program as special guest.


The inaugural program was presided over by Shoeb Chowdhury, President, Bangladesh Fencing Association (BFA). Shoeb Chowdhury said that proper initiatives need to be taken to popularize indoor games in Bangladesh like outdoor games such as cricket, football and hockey. He called upon the government and private organizations to cooperate with BFA to expand fencing in the country. Shoeb Chowdhury expressed hope that Bangladeshi fencers would be able to bring medals for the nation from international games in near future.


Professor Emeritus Dr. AK Azad Chowdhury said that fencing is one of the oldest sports of Olympic Games and it is highly popular in the western countries. He appreciated Bangladesh Fencing Association for introducing this game in Bangladesh.


Naba Bikram Kishore Tripura said that Bangladesh Fencing Association is doing a great job by promoting this sport in the country. Sports are very essential things to build up a healthy nation, he further said.


BFA Secretary General Major Qamrul Islam (Retd) thanked all the guests, sponsors, audiences and participants of the tournament. He added that BFA has been making the best of its efforts to train up Bangladeshi fencers to enable them to succeed in overseas competitions.
