CHATTOGRAM: Law enforcers in separate drives arrested four persons with 700 gold bars from different areas in the city and district on Sunday.
The arrestees were identified as Md Rakib, 34, son of late Shahidul Islam, Karim Khan alias Kalu, 34, son of Ali Hossain, of Darshana municipality under Chuadanga district, Lavlu Kumar Saha alias Proloy Kumar Saha, 59, son of Paresh Kumar Saha of Nitaiganj area under Narayanganj district headquarters, and Md Billah Hossain alias Kader, 28, son of Hashem Sawdagar of Shidalpura under Damudya upazila in Shariatpur district.Officer in-Charge (OC) Iftekhar Hasan of concerned Jorarganj police station said being informed they conducted a drive on Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Uttar Sonapahar area under Mirsarai upazila in the district in the afternoon.
They arrested Rakib and Karim from a jeep during the drive.
Later, 600 pieces of gold bars kept at a chamber developed on oil-tank of the vehicle tactfully were recovered, he said.
Market price of the gold bars weighting around 60 kilograms wound be around Tk 26.40 crore, said the OC.
In the primary interrogation, the arrestees admitted that they were taking the gold bars to the capital from the Chattogram for handing over to another person, he added.
On the other hand, on receiving information, a team of the Detective Branch (DB) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) conducted a drive in CRB area under Kotwali Police Station around 11:30 am.Deputy Commissioner (DC-Bandar) SM Mostain Hossain of the DB said Lavlu and Billal were arrested with 100 gold bars from a private car during the drive.
In the interrogation, they admitted that they were taking the gold bars to Narayanganj for handing over to a client, the DB officer said.
Two separate cases were filed against the accused with the concerned police stations in these connections, sources said.
