A section of women all over the country is faced with domestic violence due to their ignorance of law and lack of awareness, said Law Minister Anisul Huq.
“The Awami League government introduced domestic violence prevention law in 2010 and made rules in 2013 to enforce the law, but many women are still facing domestic violence due to lack of knowledge,” he said. The law minister was addressing a workshop on government’s legal aid service to protect women from domestic violence. The event was held at Judicial Administration Training Institute (JATI) in the capital on Saturday.
Following physical torture, many women commit suicide, the minister said, adding that sensible men should come forward to help the victims and encourage them to go to court.
Referring to other steps taken by the government, he said free legal aid service was introduced to help vulnerable women get justice.
Any victim of domestic violence can seek help making phone call to hotline number 16430 and 1,85,286 victims have received such service so far, he added.
He suggested women should resort to legal aid service for protection.
