Sk Russel, Sk Jamal derby ends in draw

Players of Lt Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Ltd and Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Ltd vie for the ball during their Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) Football 2018-19 match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in the capital on Sunday.

The high-voltage Bangladesh Premier League encounter between Lt Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Ltd and Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra ended in a goalless yet eventful draw at Bangabandhu National Stadium in the capital on Sunday.

Despite creating numerous chances none of the teams managed to score the decider.

Sheikh Russel were looking threatening with back to back attacks on the fifth minute of the match. The disciples of Saiful Bari Titu could have taken the lead on the 33rd minute as their ace forward Azizov Alisher’s blistering shot from the 20 yards from the post was gloved to perfection by Jamal goalie Md Nayeem.

Russel continued with their attempts to break into Jamal’s defence. On the 39th minute, Russel local gem Mohammad Khalekuzzaman shot  from the edge of the D-box swung late and crashed into the outer surface of the nets.

Sheikh Jamal launched their counter-attack led by their trusty forward Solomon King and Luciano Emanuel Perez. In the final minutes of the first half, Luciano’s right-footer off a beautiful long pass from Kings edged past the far-post.

First half ended with neither team being able to take the lead.

In order to step up the pace of attacks, Sheikh Russel head coach Titu fielded Alex Rafael as the substitute for Biplu Ahmed. Rafael looked set to change the complexion of the match as his pacy shot thundered into the crossbar. Treble winners Sheikh Russel seemed destined to share the points of the match by the football gods.

In the 73rd minute of the match, Luciano Araya nearly gave Sheikh Jamal the all-important lead but his off-target shot missed the post by a huge margin. Moments later, The Argentine striker missed another golden opportunity to score as he headed a cross from fellow forward Solomon King straight at Sheikh Russel goalie.

Sheikh Jamal could have had their lead five minutes later if King had not made a mess of an easy opportunity. Later Sheikh Jamal defenders cleared the ball.

Sheikh Jamal were also going with all guns blazing, Jamal’s Gambian forward Solomon King in his last ditch effort tried to find the elusive decisive, sprinted past the Russel midfield and with all the forces of his limbs shot from the right wing. But the speeding ball lacked direction and flew over Russel post.

With a draw in the match, Sheikh Russel managed to hold on to the third spot in BPL points table with fourteen points from six matches while Sheikh Jamal are trailing in the fifth spot with eleven points from seven matches.

Lt Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Ltd will take on Mohammedan Sporting Club Ltd in their next league match at Bangabandhu National Stadium in the capital on February 22.
