A Dhaka court on Wednesday cancelled the bail of prime accused Shafat Ahmed and sent him to jail in a case filed on charges of raping two private university students at a posh hotel in the capital’s Banani area.

Judge Khademul Kayes of Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-7 passed the order after accepting a petition filed by Public Prosecutor Md Abdullah Abu seeking cancellation of his bail.

The court also fixed March 6 for the next hearing in the case.

On November 30 last year, a Dhaka court granted bail to Shafat Ahmed who is son of Dildar Ahmed, one of the owners of Apan Jewellers.

After investigation, police submitted a charge sheet against five accused, including Shafat Ahmed. Of the five accused, Shafat Ahmed and Nayem Ashraf were indicted for rape while three others — Shadman Sakif, Shafat’s driver Billal Hossain and bodyguard Rahmat Ali — for assisting in the rape.

Law enforcers arrested the five from Dhaka and Sylhet.
