The Dhaka University authorities will today announce schedules of elections to Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) and its hall units.
Chief returning officer of DUCSU election Prof SM Mahfuzur Rahman will officially announce the schedule at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban auditorium in the morning
Earlier on January 23, the DU authorities hinted that polls will be held on March 11 to elect DUCSU office-bearers for one-year term. They fixed a 30-year age-limit for candidates and declared that polling centres will be set up inside the dormitories.
DUCSU election was held 36 times after its inception in 1922. But the student platform has remained dysfunctional for nearly three decades.
The student parliament election came to a halt after the fall of HM Ershad’s dictatorship in 1990.
After the completion of the Ershad era, vice-chancellors performed their duties, but no DUCSU polls were held.
Though schedules for DUCSU election were announced several times, vice chancellors failed to hold DUCSU polls due to ‘lack of a fair atmosphere’ on the campus.
