Triathlon training can be difficult and challenging for beginners. But in the end, the rewarding feeling one gets by completing that first triathlon is worth all of the sweat and tears. If you are looking to try a triathlon, here are four training tips to keep in mind as you go forward.

A triathlon is a competitive challenge that’s divided into three parts: swimming, cycling and running. There are various types of triathlons, ranging from the difficult Iron Man to the half- or middle-distance triathlon. There are shorter distance events like the Olympic or short-distance challenges, which have distances of 0.93 miles of swimming, 24.8 miles of cycling and 6.2 miles of running. As a beginner, one thing to consider is what type you want to start with. That decision will help determine your training regimen.

Set Training Goals

As you lay out your training schedule it is important to set planned goals that you want to reach at certain points in your training. These goals will involve time and distance. Since your ultimate aim is to complete in whatever challenge you undertake, it is important that you gradually work toward those final distances. So set goals that will get you to the finish line. These goals will help you see your improvement.

Proper Equipment

All three aspects have specific attire and equipment that is required to compete in and complete a challenge. Therefore, it’s a good idea to find the correct bike that fits your style and is comfortable to be on for long distances.

Swimming requires proper gear as well. This includes a Lycra competitive swimsuit as well as goggles and a swim cap. And since running starts with your feet, comfortable running shoes are a must. Shoes wear out quickly, so you may need several good pairs. Clothing is also important for running and cycling.

Balance in Training

As you set your training regimen remember to balance the time you spend training for all three events. In other words, do not give more time to one event over the other. By the start time of the challenge you want to feel confident in all three.
