Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader warned Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) officials saying that none would be spared if anyone is found responsible for irregularities, corruption and harassment.

“Irregularities will not be allowed and all has to ensure transparency so that none is subjected to harassment,” he said.

Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said this while exchanging views with the BRTA officials at a meeting at its headquarters in Banani in the capital on Wednesday.

The minister also warned of taking legal actions if any official of BRTA is found responsible for tarnishing its image.

“I want a corruption-free BRTA and all have to work with transparency. You have to face legal action if you don’t correct yourself,” he said.

The minister urged all to work towards building a harassment- and middlemen-free BRTA.

“There was a time when fitness papers of a vehicle could be collected from the office without bringing the vehicle, but situation has changed a little at present,” he said.

“But I do not want to see any middlemen inside BRTA, as they are responsible for damaging the reputation of the organization,” he added.

Turning to political issues, Quader said Bangladesh Nationalist Party have failed to wage any movement over the last ten years, as general people did not respond to their call.

“Why will people respond to BNP’s call for movement? They are now living in peace after landslide victory of Awami League in the last general election,” he said.

The minister said the governing party would finalize candidature for mayoral by-polls of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) on January 26.

About the progress of the Padma Bridge, Quader said the construction of the bridge has been going on fast as 63 percent work of the project has already been complete.

“Through the installation of the sixth span of the bridge, about one kilometer of the bridge now becomes visible while metro Rail from Uttara to Agargaon will open this year,” he said.
