Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Mohammad Sayeed Khokon on Monday warned that those who have grabbed city canals will not be spared.

“We won’t spare anyone whatever their political ideologies are,” he said.

The mayor came up with the statements after inaugurating the clean-up drive of Kutubkhali canal at Dholaipar portion in Jatrabari.

He said that it is not a small initiative to free the canals from grabbers, but a part of the mega plan.

“We want to free all the canals from illegal occupation and want the water to flow freely through the canals,”

The mayor said that illegal structures along 73 kilometres of the 93-kilometre canals in various places under the Dhaka-Narayanganj-Demra project area have already been demolished.

“Bangladesh Army is working on the project. We will make arrangements for water vessels to travel on the canal,” he said.

After the inauguration, the mayor visited the cleaning operation site, raised awareness about the importance of canals and requested locals and businessmen not to fill the canal with garbage.

The 2.1-kilometer canal is now totally littered with domestic garbage and hyacinth and grabbed by occupiers.

Chief Executive Officer of DSCC Mostafizur Rahman, Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore Md Zahid Hossain, Chief Estate Officer Md Asaduzzaman, DSCC Councillors — Kazi Habibur Rahman Habu and Mohammad Nur Hossain — and members of Bangladesh army were present on the occasion.
