Movement of people and vehicles are being obstructed, as buses and cars seized by police are parked haphazardly in the street of Shahbagh in the capital.
Law enforcers of Shahbagh Police Station and traffic sergeants seize vehicles on varying charges, including unfitness, almost every day. Later, they keep the vehicles in front of the police station, resulting in a big snarl-up from Shahbagh to Dhaka University. On Monday morning, this correspondent visited the area and saw vehicles, including buses, trucks and lorries in the area. Street vendors in the area alleged that some owners and drivers of private cars and motorcyclists park their vehicles in the area cashing in on the situation, which aggravates the traffic jam.
Sohagh Ahmed and Bithi Akter, students of Dhaka University, said they are often stuck in traffic while going to campus by rickshaw. Aminul Islam, a flower trader at Shahbagh, said illegal parking of seized vehicles obstructs movement of other vehicles and causes heavy traffic jam on a regular basis.
Officer-in-Charge of Shahbagh Police Station Abul Hasan said they are compelled to keep the seized vehicles in the street due to inadequacy of the parking space at the police station.
