CHATTOGRAM: Two listed drug peddlers were killed in a gunfight with police at Teknaf upazila in the district on early Thursday.

Police recovered five local guns, 22 rounds of bullet and 22,000 pieces of Yaba tablet after the gunfight.

The deceased identified as Abdur Rashid alias Dailla, 47, son of Imam Sharif, and Abul Kalam, 33, son of Abdru Rahman, both hailed from Sabrang union under the upazila.

Sources said police arrested the duo from the upazila on Wednesday afternoon.  Acting on their statements, police conducted a drive taking the arrestees with them to recover firearms and drug in Hadiakhali Khurer Mukh area under the Sabrang union around 4:00am.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, accomplices of the arrestees opened fire on police prompting them to retaliate with bullet resulting in a gunfight, said Officer in-Charge (OC) Pradip Kumar Das of concerned Teknaf police station. At one stage, the drug peddlers fled the scene leaving the arrestees in bullet-hit condition, he said.

The duo was rushed to Upazila Health Complex where on-duty physicians declared them dead, said the OC.

OC Pradip also informed that three cops identified as Sub Inspector (SI) Borhan Uddin and Farhad, and constable Hridoy were injured during the gunfight.

Five local guns, 22 rounds of bullet and 22,000 pieces of Yaba tablet were recovered from the spot after the gunfight, he said.
