An allegation of irregularities in teachers’ recruitment process has surfaced against the vice chancellor of the University at Gopalganj.

Sources said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science & Technology University (BSMRSTU) Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Khondoker Nasiruddin is allegedly using unfair means to pick his favourite candidates for different faculty positions in the university.

Allegations had it that the university authority has called only the VC’s favourite candidates for the interview likely to be held today while many eligible ones have been left out.

Seeking anonymity, a candidate said: “I have all qualifications to vie for the faculty position as per the circular, but the university authority did not call me for the vive-voce.”

“I urge the government for immediate interventions so that qualified candidates can get selected.”

Talking to several candidates, it was known that the VC appointed several part-time teachers to different departments after the recruitment circular was floated on September 20 last – a move that goes against the rule.

Of the part-timers, Tamanna Yasmin working for Sociology Department and Toriqul Islam for Mathematic Department and several others are said to be the VC’s favourites, who failed to get selected by the November 15 selection board.

On November 29, a similar circular was floated, and a viva-voce is likely to be held today on December 17. Many a deprived candidate believes that this time also the vice-chancellor will try to pick his favourite part-timers.

Besides, one of the experts of today’s selection board Prof Dr Zeenat Huda, a Dhaka University professor, said she smelt rat in the teachers’ recruitment process.

“I will submit a report of allegation of irregularities to the University Grants Commission, asking the commission to investigate into the teachers’ recruitment process at the university.”

Asked about the irregularities, VC Prof Khondoker said he has no favourite candidate.

He claimed that “Only the qualified candidates are getting job there.”

The VC went to the extent of saying that the university has been established by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and the best people of the country are getting appointed here.

He said: “Some people who fail to appoint their ineligible candidates are making allegations of irregularities against me.”
