CHATTOGRAM: A Chattogram court on Thursday awarded life-term imprisonment to a person for killing his wife at Fatikchhari upazila in the district around 18 years back.

The court of Chittagong Third Additional District and Session Judge Munsi Abdul Majid also awarded financial penalty of Tk 50,000 and three more months’ imprisonment, in default, said the court Additional Public Prosecutor (PP) BK Biswas.

The convict was identified as Anwar Ullah, son of Badsha Mian of Bhujpur under Fatikchhari upazila in the district.

According to deposition of the case, Anwar wanted to marry a woman living near their house and sought permission from his first and pregnant wife Laila Begum.

Failing to get permission, Anwar beat and strangled his wife on April 22 in 2000. He also kept a bottle of poison beside her body to pass the death as suicide.

But, an autopsy report revealed the death as murder. The victim’s father Kamal Ullah filed a case in this connection later.

Police submitted charge sheet in the case on January 27 in 2001 while a court framed charges against the accused on June 8 of the same year.

After hearing from 17 witnesses the court pronounced the verdict on Thursday, said the PP.
