Charges pressed against 6 over accident on Airport Road

Police on Thursday pressed charges against six people in a case over the death of two college students in a road accident on Airport Road on July 29, reports UNB.

The accused are Shahadat Hossain, owner of 'Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan' bus which is responsible for the accident, its driver Masum Billah, his assistant Enayet Hossain, owner of another 'Jabal-e-Noor' bus Jahangir Alam, its driver Zobair Sumon and his assistant Asad.

Among them, Asad and Jahangir Alam remain absconding.

DB Inspector Kazi Shariful Islam, also investigation officer of the case, submitted the chargesheet.

Talking to reporters at Dhaka Metropolitan Media Centre on Thursday afternoon, additional commissioner (DB) of DMP said that as the accident sparked student protests across the country, the investigation has been done within one month on priority basis.

"We expect that the court will start the trial soon and it will be finished soon. The highest punishment for the offence will be life term imprisonment," said the DMP official.

It was found in the investigation that the accident took place following the competition of two drivers of the vehicles of 'Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan'.

Earlier on July 29, Diya Khanam Mim and Abdul Karim Rajib, first year students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College, were killed as a bus ploughed through some students in front of Kurmitola General Hospital on Airport Road in the capital.

The accident triggered a widespread protest by students, demanding safe roads and seeking justice for their fellows.
