Three suspected drug traders were killed in separate ‘gunfights’ in Bogura, Tangail and Jashore in the early hours of Friday.

In Bogura town, a tripartite gunfight between police and two rival gangs of drug dealers killed a drug dealer around 3:00am, said Bogura superintendent of police (SP) Ali Ashraf Bhuiyan.

Being informed that a clash was going on between two rival gangs of drug dealers near Bhatkandi Bridge, a patrol team of police rushed to the spot, he informed.

“Seeing police presence, the drug dealers opened fire on the law enforcers  forcing them to retaliate,” he said, adding that the victim was later found in a pool of blood.

The victim was rushed to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead.

Later, the man was identified as Putu Sarkar, elder brother of suspended Sramik League leader Tufan Sarkar, also the prime accused in a case filed over rape of a schoolgirl and torture on her mother.

Putu was accused in five criminal cases. Two firearms, eight bullets and 500 Yaba pills were recovered from the spot.

In Tangail Sadar upazila, a ‘drug dealer’ named M Afzal was killed in another ‘gunfight’ with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

Tangail Model Thana police said the deceased was a listed drug peddler and wanted in three criminal cases.

A team of RAB-12 launched an anti-drug drive in Beguntal around 3:00am, said Major Rabiul Islam, commander of Crime Prevention Company-3 of RAB-12.

Sensing presence of elite force personnel, the criminals opened fire on them  prompting them to retaliate triggering a gunfight.

After the gunfight, a bullet-hit man was found lying there. He was taken to Tangail General Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead, the official said.

A pistol, some bullets, Phensidyl bottles and Yaba tablets were recovered from the spot.

In Jashore, a suspected drug peddler was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with rival gangs in Burar Beel area near Koyerpara bazaar in Chowgacha upazila.

The deceased was identified as Ratan Hossain, son of Abu Bakar of Digholsingha village in the upazila, said Khondokar Samimuddin, officer-in-charge of Chowgacha police station.

On a tip-off that a gunfight between two rival gangs of drug peddlers was going on in the area, a police team went to the spot and recovered bullet-hit  Ratan, the OC said.

He was taken to Jessore General Hospital where an on-duty doctor named Shafiullah Sabuj declared him dead.

Ratan was an accused in several narcotics-related cases, the OC said, adding that the criminals fled from the spot sensing presence of the law enforcers.

Some 200 pieces of Yaba tablets, a shooter gun and bullets were recovered from the spot, the police official said.

However, Ratan’s mother Farida Begum claimed that her son used to work at a garment factory in Dhaka and was never involved in narcotics trade.

Ratan had been missing since Saturday after he left his house to go to Magura, she said, adding that he had gone to Jashore a few days ago.
