Shaheed Asad Day is being observed across the country in a befitting manner.
Today is the 49th martyrdom anniversary of Asad. On this day in 1969, Asad was killed in firing by Pakistani forces in front of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) while protesting their repression on the people of the then East Pakistan.
Through Asad’s supreme sacrifice during the mass upsurge of 1969, the autocratic regime of Field Marshal Ayub Khan was forced to step down and led to the country's independence.
Asad was a master student of History Department at Dhaka University; also the DU unit president and Dhaka city unit general secretary of former East Pakistan Chhatra Union.
Different socio-political organisations, including Shaheed Asad Parishad, have chalked out elaborate programmes that include placing wreaths at the memorial plaque of Asad in front of the DMCH and his grave at Shibpur in Narsingdi.
Meanwhile, President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia have issued separate messages on the occasion.
