Nine eye patients undergo surgery at Orbis

CHITTAGONG: The physicians of Orbis, an international non-profit organisation working to eliminate avoidable blindness across the world, conducted surgery on nine eye patients on the first day of two-week programme in the port city on Monday.

The patients including four children and five adults underwent surgeries under four subspecialties.

The child patients had been suffering from superior oblique paresis, exotropia and cataract, said Orbis officials.

Voluntary surgeons of Orbis’s Flying Eye Hospital (FEH) from different countries, including the USA and India, conducted the surgeries at the FEH, onboard an MD-10 aircraft, at the Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport and the Chittagong Eye Infirmary and Training Complex (CEITC) in the city.

The international faculties also provided training to the eye care professionals from different parts of the country during the surgeries on Monday.
The surgeries were broadcast live for the professionals at different corners of the world, they said.

The volunteer physicians screened some 100 eye patients, including adults and children, on Sunday and selected around 40 patients for treatment and surgery for diseases like cataract (phaco), paediatric cataract, strabismus, medical retina and retinopathy of prematurity as part of the two-week training programme of the of FEH.

In the second phase of the programme, some 40 more patients will be selected after screening some 100 patients, said the officials.

FEH, the world’s only US-accredited teaching hospital onboard an aircraft, arrived at the Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport on Thursday.

This has been FEH’s 10th visit to Bangladesh since 1985 and the fourth tour in Chittagong. FEH arrived in Bangladesh at the invitation of the Health and Family Welfare Ministry and National Eye Care (NEC) under the directorate general of health services while CEITC is hosting the tour and training programme.

During the tour, the volunteer faculties from different parts of the world will provide ophthalmic training aiming at updating the ophthalmic knowledge and skills of eye care professionals and introducing them to latest technologies till November 30.
